July’s DeskLodger of the Month is none other than the queen of data visualisation, Charlotte Hadley! Read about why she loves data and DeskLodge.
I love, love data and I really want others to be enthusiastic and motivated by data. What better way to do that with data visualisation?
There's something really human about turning raw, complex data into stories and business intelligence.
I'm also an open science evangelist and utterly adore the R community and what it brings to data visualization.
People do such different, incredible things with data visualisations. I'm constantly amazed by the choices people take. And choices is used there on a whole spectrum from awe to pejoratively.
I'm focusing on launching a full-time data visualisation consultancy later this year. Might cause some groans, but a podcast is a big part of that plan - or maybe a limited series audiocast, to manage expectations I might not get beyond 10 episodes.
It's really exciting thinking about and planning how to both embed and differentiate myself in the dataviz and R community.
DeskLodge is just such a lush, chill refuge to work. I can't concentrate on working on my own at home - it doesn't work.
I want to feel part of a community. I also live in conflict between wanting good coffee but refusing to invest in anything other than "good instant coffee" at home.
DeskLodge meets those goals and so much more.
At the moment I'm working hybrid 4 days a week in a jobby job that has me commute to Cardiff from Bristol 40% of the time. When they're not dragging me to Cardiff I'm here in DeskLodge Beacon Tower.
And for the remaining 1 day where I'm self-employed? I'm here at DeskLodge.
I recently told friends DeskLodge was "fun corporate chic" but they didn't understand, and Google doesn't seem to agree with me.
So, how about... DeskLodge is fun, playful and calm? I can get my head down and also willingly distract myself with the awesome teamworking here and my co-coworkers.
