Meet our September DeskLodger of the Month, Paul Martin 👋
Paul’s a graphic designer, regular Hot Desker and someone whose career has taken him from early MacPaint to billboard campaigns, fake gigs and even a classified submarine base. 👀
We caught up with him to talk design, DeskLodge and his dream studio (office dog included, obviously 🐶).
I was always interested in art and design and had an inspirational graphics teacher at school who let me use the ‘Mac room’ at lunchtimes to mess about on very early versions of MacPaint - on mono-screened Macs (showing my age here)! I was fascinated by these machines, how they looked, the things you could do - it felt like a new futuristic world to me.
When I realised that it could be a job I followed the traditional route of taking an Art Foundation course and then studied Graphic Design at University.
I think the most surprising aspect is the variety of things it can lead to. I’ve been to some really interesting places, directed photoshoots of fake gigs, made the news with a billboard campaign and even visited a classified submarine base!
I’ve always had an idea that it would be great to run my own studio, I kind of do that at the moment on a micro level, but perhaps to expand, build a team and have a dedicated space with an office dog would be fab.
It’s perfect for me, I always feel like I’m coming into my own office! The team are always genuinely interested in what’s going on and ready to help in whatever way they can, they are like my colleagues and I genuinely mean that. Also the facilities are second-to-none and constantly improving which is great to see and be part of.
I mostly work from home, but I am often out and about in Bristol or Bath visiting clients and most weeks I’m in Desk Lodge of course!
Productive, Positive and Playful.
