From the early days of one location to the award-winning, vibrant workspaces we run today, Jamie’s been here through it all. He’s helped shape the spaces, build the culture, and steer DeskLodge through a decade of big wins, bold moves, and unforgettable moments.
To celebrate, we sat down with him for a special “10 Questions for 10 Years” Q&A - covering his favourite memories, proudest moments, biggest lessons, and what’s next for DeskLodge.
How did you first get involved with DeskLodge, and what was your vision at the time?
I was working in the health and fitness industry, fancied a change and saw a job ad for a Centre Manager role of a coworking space. I thought “What is that?”, as I knew nothing about the flex space industry! I managed to secure an interview, met Tom and the rest as they say, is history.
What stands out most from those early days?
The excitement of knowing we were building something special, where people thrived and were happy. I was very much learning on the job, which I think is the best way, and the fact that from day one we had fantastic members and teams meant it was always a joy to provide for these people.
What are the key moments or achievements that defined your 10 years here?
Growing through the business from Centre Manager, Operations Director and now Managing Director and the learning and experiences that has brought. Expanding DeskLodge outside of Bristol and growing in Bristol. Recruiting amazing team members and helping to guide their development whilst heading up the Leadership Team and being the company integrator. Plus some of the amazing awards, parties and moments that have been created along the way.
Of everything you’ve worked on, which project or initiative has been your favourite, and why?
That’s really tough, there have been many big and small, and I feel like I struggle to remember all of the things DeskLodge has achieved in my time. But heading up the recent rebrand is hard to ignore as it’s the evolution of all of our hard work over 10 years and shining a light on us in a new way.
What’s been the biggest challenge, and what did it teach you?
As I’ve grown and experienced so many things at DeskLodge, I think the biggest learning is not to overly worry about what could happen and to just roll with it (a company value). Often the worst outcome doesn’t happen or isn’t as bad as your brain can imagine, so staying composed and thinking logically has been a good learning and one I can pass onto the team.
How have you helped shape the culture and community that DeskLodge is known for?
When I started there were no processes at all! Just top up the coffee machine and give people a tour and the WIFI code. Since then I have covered every role in the company, picking up tips and tricks and building a great understanding for how best for DeskLodge to operate, so we’re successful and everyone enjoys their time with us. Member experience is ingrained in all my actions, so building the buzz through every aspect of that I have championed from day one. As we have recruited amazing people along the way, I ensured it carried through with every team member. Now I can just sit back and watch the magic happen through our team and spaces.
Which DeskLodge win - big or small - means the most to you?
What means the most to me, is knowing I provide guidance, direction and development to the DeskLodge team. So if the team are happy and thriving, I feel happy and fulfilled. It sounds a bit cheesy, but nurturing and recruiting the wonderful people that work for DeskLodge is overall what I am most proud of. The awards along the way help, of course!
What’s something people might be surprised to learn about running a workspace like DeskLodge?
How much we think about how we can improve and make our members experience better. We have zero downtime and for me personally nothing is ever quite finished and can always be tweaked and improved. This way of thinking sometimes means it’s hard to switch off (which the team will tell you I struggle to do!)
What’s next for DeskLodge, and what excites you most?
Keeping the momentum and good vibes going, building on our strong Bristol foundation and being open to what the next chapter looks like. Having just launched the rebrand we can now go in whatever direction our DeskLodge heart takes us. It could be another workspace nearby, it could be a DeskLodge local or lite product. That’s what makes it exciting.
Favourite DeskLodge space or feature? Has to be the Beacon roof terrace
Go-to drink at work? Classic Americano
Best DeskLodge social or event? Halloween socials (especially the ones at Old Market where it all started)
Most-used work zone? Beach hot desk zone at Beacon
Weirdest or funniest thing you’ve seen happen? Over 100 fancy dress costumes casually being available in our space
If DeskLodge had a theme song, what would it be? Something sunny and energy-filled, like Calvin Harris’ Summer
If you could add any feature to a DeskLodge space (no limits!), what would it be? A running track around the roof and a sauna and cold shower for after. Watch this space.
Ten years is a huge milestone - and Jamie’s journey has been part of what’s made DeskLodge what it is today. From shaping our spaces to championing our team, his impact can be felt in every corner of our workspaces.
Here’s to the next chapter - and to many more years of making work wonderful.
