The joys & challenges of working from home with Team DeskLodge

In these surreal times of lockdown, there are a few members of the DeskLodge team that are still working the day shift, well night shift, in their PJs shift, not having a clue what day it is shift...

Working from home and trying keep up morale and productivity, whilst enjoying a few home comforts, the working Team DeskLodge share below how they have been dealing with WFH.

What has been your biggest challenge working from home?

I don’t have a desk so working from a sofa is not easy, lovely for a short period of time, but it can get uncomfortable.

I miss talking to lots of different people every day and the general hustle and bustle of life at DeskLodge. I also miss being part of city life, walking to and from work and popping out on my lunch break.

What have you been enjoying about working from home?

My cat, Duke, has got friendlier. Normally he can be a bit moody, but he is now getting way better at me giving him too many cuddles.

I have been getting back into HIIT workouts with Joe Wicks and finally getting my husband to do it with me as well, which feels like a victory in itself!

What has been your biggest challenge working from home?

Staying laser focused! My workload hasn’t gone down in the slightest, so my challenges are managing my time, ensuring I take screen breaks and being really clear on my top 5 work goals for the day and sticking to them.

What have you been enjoying about working from home?

I’m enjoying eating every evening with Gina (wifey), daily walks together around the local park and eating lunch away from my laptop...as expected mainly food-related!

My BF made me an indoors outdoors so I can have time away from the screen, fresh air and a break from work, smashing I-paper crosswords, my new obsession!

What has been your biggest challenge working from home?

I am mostly missing the House Hosts, they make me laugh out loud daily, we always work really well as a team and times like this highlight that even more. Also, our members are such interesting, decent people, I love being around them.

What have you been enjoying about working from home?

I have been loving it so far as I’m being so productive, getting round to completing projects that things like blocked toilets can get in the way of!  I spent 4 years rebuilding my whole house so spending more time in it has been lovely.

Also, I have never felt so grateful for my garden, even though it is a total dump and needs so much work, I feel lucky to have it. There’s a pull-up bar out there that’s finally getting some use!

What has been your biggest challenge working from home?

The thing I miss most is being active and obviously the diversity of chatting to so many different people every day! I really miss my walk to work and breaking up the day with exercise, which helps me focus.

I find it very challenging sitting down for too long so I like to factor in yoga/exercise into my day. I’ve been doing virtual classes with Wild Wolf Yoga on my lunch break as you still get the community feel with a little chat before and the support of knowing everyone is practising with you at the same time

What have you been enjoying about working from home?

I re-discovered the joys of toast. Whilst I miss my daily commute, it’s great to have a bit more time for reading at the start and end of the day. Please let me know if you want any book recommendations.

It’s been great seeing lots of people use our Slack channel and I love seeing people’s pets and some of the great ideas people have been sharing to support each other.

What has been your biggest challenge working from home?

Trying to focus on work whilst I have a child next to me complaining/crying about doing homeschooling is a challenge! Whilst other kids are running around, arguing and having music lessons (trumpet and drums….wish we choose quieter instruments, thank goodness it isn’t a violin!).

I have had to balance out my time so I can focus on both work and my family. I still seem mega busy!

I really miss being able to go out to a restaurant or see friends, I miss being amongst the buzz of Bristol's creativity, the people, the music, the street art, DeskLodge! Things I used to see and do every day.

What have you been enjoying about working from home?

I have really enjoyed getting outside in the morning for walks, runs and bike rides with my kids (replacing the commute to work/school run). We are eating together every day too so I’m spending more quality time with them and my husband Phil, plus I’m getting more exercise in, which is great.

Now we are not commuting/doing kids clubs -(seriously every night!!!) I have extra time in the evenings, including making time for relaxing baths! I have noticed I’ve managed to tick a couple of extra things off the to do list that would usually take weeks, even months to get done.

I’m also loving keeping in touch, more than ever, with people via video calling, seriously why wasn’t I using it this much before?

My standing height home desk (just like at DeskLodge) overlooking the deserted high street with my dodgy self-haircut after my clippers broke mid-cut!

What has been your biggest challenge working from home?

I miss people! I started DeskLodge because I worked at home, loved it at first but then became stir crazy and lonely. That and drinking too much wine to try and deal with the stress!

What have you been enjoying about working from home?

My kids (9 & 13) seem to have responded really well to home-schooling – they have been wonderfully good at getting their work done and motivating themselves – as well as finding projects to do.
