DeskLodge Expert Series - Supporting the development of an inclusive tech industry

In the second of our blogs from DeskLodge experts, we hear from Serrie Chapman, co-founder of Women's Tech Hub on how we can support the development of an inclusive tech industry.

Women's Tech Hub meet at DeskLodge House every other Wednesday for their 'Workshop Wednesday' events and new members are always welcome.

Supporting the development of an inclusive tech industry

Women's Tech Hub grew from our shared love of working in tech, alongside our awareness of the lack of diversity. Our mission is to support the development of a tech industry that is inclusive of all so that it reflects the wider society.

Individuals

We aim to support and encourage women and gender non-conforming people working in, or wishing to move into the tech industry through our careers support, workshops and signposting.

Companies

We support companies wishing to improve on their inclusion through introducing them to our members through our candidates page and to reach out through our Jobs Board (which we offer up free to Desklodge members – simply use the code “desklodge_free”) We also welcome companies wishing to engage through offering sponsorship, workshops and more.

We run regular workshops, meetups and events such as our supportive careers fairs and small conferences.  We recognise that the more we support each other, the more we can get out there and inspire others.

Our events

We run regular events and networking opportunities including Workshop Wednesdays gratefully supported by Desklodge and Girl Geek Dinners, which is hosted by companies keen to support women in the industry.

Some examples of their support services include:

Training: Women’s Tech Hub offers workshops on a variety of topics, including coding, to help women develop the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in tech.

Mentorship: Women’s Tech Hub provides tailored mentorship introductions to connect women with experienced professionals in the tech industry. These mentors offer guidance and support, helping women navigate the challenges of working in tech and advance their careers.

Networking: Women’s Tech Hub hosts regular networking events that bring together women in tech, providing opportunities to connect, share knowledge, and build relationships. The networking events are partnered with groups such as CodeHub’s Python Dojo and Bristol Data Science and Machine Learning and are happy to partner with other groups.

Workshop Wednesday

Our Workshop Wednesdays are bi-weekly term-time meetups, which are free and welcome to all our members. We supply drinks and snacks and occasionally pizzas if we have any sponsoring companies. The workshops are pretty flexible and we also offer careers advice and networking to members wanting to just pop in.

Job opportunities: Women’s Tech Hub partners with local employers to promote job opportunities for women in tech. They also provide job boards and other resources to help women find and apply for jobs in the industry.

Advocacy: Women’s Tech Hub advocates for greater diversity and inclusion in the tech industry, working to raise awareness of the challenges faced by women and other underrepresented groups and promote policies and initiatives that promote greater diversity and inclusivity.

Freelance directory

They have recently set up a new Freelance Directory to support our women who are working as freelancers or consultants – if you are interested in being added simply add yourself to the Directory page here.

Pop along

If you see them at DeskLodge you are always welcome to have a chat and join the group, they welcome new members and are always happy to discuss how to support individuals or companies.
